4/5 (Sat.) A Night Out: Let's Go Clubbing! (Host: Sunny Sr.)

文章 sunny »

Hello, guys! I'm Sunny, the host on 4/5. Our April theme on Saturday afternoons- “Entertainment”- will start soon!

Some say, “If you want to see what real life in Britain is all about, you have to go to the pub.” Indeed, pub-going is by far the most popular native pastime. With Western influences, nowadays pub-going also is becoming more and more popular among friends and colleagues in Taiwan. Please refer to the articles and discussion questions I prepared below.

Since 4/5 will be on a long weekend, my tiny, little hopes are – (1) it will be a lovely sunny day; (2) more YOYOs can join our discussion :ccry:

Well, we have a dress-code for this meeting. Don't worry, it's so simple that everyne can do:

Dress code: Laziness (Eg. Lazy Geek Style / Lazy Cat Style/ Lazy Housewife Style)
Attitude: Bring your childlike heart!

Reference Articles:
Pub-Culture:
- UK Pubs and Public Houses

Pub-Talk:
- Pub-Talk in a British Pub

Session 1: Pub / Night Club Culture
(You may pick any two questions to discuss)
1. What's your first impression on a night club? Do you think a night club is an immoral place? What're the social benefits of a night club?

2. Discuss the social and culture aspect of drinking:
(1) Chinese culture: Drinking with business partners or would-be friends is a way of solidifying the partnership. People think they would “lose face” for refusing to bottoms-up.
(2) Japanese culture: Office and job are men's lives. Going home is not a man's priority. Instead, a man usually ends up staying out until finishing the last round of drinking with his colleagues.
(3) Western culture: People like to go drinking at a bar and meet new friends there on weekends.

3. What's your way to expand your social network?

Session 2: Pub-Argument and Pub-Humor
Pub-argument
Pub-arguments are not like arguments in the real world; instead, it is an enjoyable game. Pub regulars will often start an argument about anything, just for the fun of it. Now use your creativity and imagination and start a pub-argument with your friends: Remember, “Fun and enjoyable”

(You may pick any two questions to discuss. Also, imagine you're chatting with your friends in a pub. Please play roles and divide your group into pro-team vs. con-team)

1. You see a girl dressed in a mini-skirt. So you guys start on an argument if a mini skirt is suitable for our society.
2. You hear your friend fart. So you guys start to argue if farting is polite or not.
3. Your parents is pushing you to get married soon. So you guys start to argue if marriage is necessary or not.

Hey! This is one of my favorite. I always want to go to some pubs or clubs for adventure.
In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.

Ha... this is going to be an interesting topic. I am in!
Probably we can have a "field trip" to a pub or KTV to put the theory we learn in the meeting into practice. :sun:

Hey it's a good suggestion, Roger. I think our second-round gathering could be arranged if you guys would like to join in.

Well, action speaks louder than words. Let me assign our dress code of this meeting right now; it's very easy:

Dress code: Laziness (Eg. Lazy Geek Style / Lazy Cat Style/ Lazy Housewife Style)
Attitude: Bring your childlike heart!

don't know if you are interested in watching football but there will be a match between my favorite Arsenal and the other famous one Liverpool from English Premiership on Sat night at 7:40 in Brassmonkey. though it's not exact a club or disco pub but more of a sports pub(or bar), it's just near by our meeting place. anyway i will ask you then to see what your decision is. :D

Hey, I really like that drinking bar you mentioned. Sometimes I go there as well; if you like to watch LIVE match on the big screen, it's a nice place to suggest!

As far as I know, rugby, fooball, cricket, ice hockey, soccer..etc., are among the most popular sports in public pub for pubgoer to start a conversation.

I also like a Irish pub named "Shannon" whose decoration is in good taste; you may have heard its name a lot in ICRT commercial time.

Well, I should get back to my lousy work and shouldn't talk too much now...Anyway, see you guys later on Saturday^^

Let me ask a stupid question. Is there a clear-cut distinction between a pub, bar, or nightclub?

I notice that there is a restaurant called HOOTERs right close to our meeting venue. Does it fit into any of the three categories?

Hey Kooper,

Responding to your question quickly: there's no distinctive difference between pub(public house), bar(which is derived from specilaized counter), and night club. Since HOOTERS serves alocol drinks for its main commercial purpose, it can be grouped under pub, bar, and night club.

You may see the following definition quoted from wikipedia:

A pub (public house) is an establishment which serves alcoholic drinks — especially beer — for consumption on the premises, usually in a comfortable setting. ....Although the terms may have different connotations, there is no definitive difference between pubs, bars, taverns and lounges where alcohol is served commercially
